In the words of Irene Cara ‘Take Your Passion and Make it Happen’

“The Body Says What Words Cannot ~ Martha Graham”

A little while back myself and a couple of fellow photographer friends Chrissy Mathew and Jo Rutherford were chatting and we mentioned about getting together to do a shoot.  As with most things in life we all have good intentions that never come to fruition!  However on this occasion we set a date there and then!  Determined not to let this shoot be simply another passing comment we set to work on organising when and where.

I had an idea of the sort of thing that I wanted to do and ran it by Jo and Chrissy both of whom were happy to go with it.  I have a thing about derelict buildings and find them fascinating so knew that I had to find somewhere that had a past but lost history to do the shoot in.  I managed to find the perfect location and also get permission to shoot – happy days! I put out a casting call for a model that had a background in ballet as this was one of the themes that I had in mind and luck must have been on our side as the gorgeous model  Zana O’Connell replied.  All three of us had actually shot with Zana before so we knew how amazing she was to work with!

Of course a photo shoot isn’t quite complete without a makeup artist and we were very fortunate to have Laura Walton onboard.  Laura spent the time and effort ahead of the shoot to study our mood boards and come up with suggestions of her own.  Even arriving on the day with little example sheets where makeup had been applied to a face on the paper – I am sure that there is a technical name for these sheets so I apologise for not knowing it!  Not only did Laura do a fantastic job with the makeup she was an awesome assistant, holding our reflectors for us and basically following us round the location!  All in all we couldn’t have asked for a better MUA!

We had set the date for the shoot as the 10th May and from the beginning of May all it did was rain!  This wasn’t a good omen for the building as it was in a pretty bad way to begin with so rain would simply gnarl away at it’s already damaged core…  The day arrived and I was up with the lark and extremely grateful to see the sun shining through the window, although on arrival to the site the last few days of rain had made a pretty bad mess of things making it extremely damp and cold inside.  As it was much warmer outside Zana and Laura set themselves up out the front of the building to get ready while myself, Chrissy and Jo set about deciding on locations to shoot.

The whole essence of the shoot from the beginning was about a lost soul, the past – what could have been and remembrance of what had been.  What was so great about the day though was how each one of us evolved while shooting and had our own ideas on what to make of the day and how to make it work for ourselves.  It was so great to see the sparks coming from both Chrissy and Jo  :)

Added to the obvious fun and enjoyment this shoot gave me it was also a tremendous learning curve – here are some of thing that I have learnt:

Nobody can pack a Smart car better than Jo Rutherford – I dare anyone to take the challenge!

I overshoot way too much, I need to take the time to focus and compose more.

Fox pee and poop is really rather smelly.

Look for the light!!!

I am much braver than I thought with releasing trapped pidgeons.

Stick to one or two ideas – no more!

Relax and don’t worry so much about all the little things.

I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY

I know I have thanked everyone already but I want to thank them all again for making it the truly amazing day it was, it was in difficult circumstances and I think we all got dripped and blobbed on from water and gooey stuff that was pouring in from the ceilings!  The day was full of fun, farting bubblewrap, photographer on photographer love (Jo has the evidence – I warn you if you ever shoot with me – I am dangerous!!) and lots of learning!  Thanks to Jo and Chrissy for all their pearls of wisdom – I always love how much you can learn from others and thanks also to both Zana and Laura who coped so well considering the bog like location!   Next time I promise to find us a slightly more glamourous place!!

Of course no shoot is complete without a few behind the scene shots, here is our lovely MUA Laura getting Zana ready and just a small selection of our props – seriously we had double this!  Oh and the two creative prop directors there;)

Chrissy and Jo demonstrate exactly how it’s really done and I think Jo may have had a little too many beans for breakfast….

Sweet Tooth

I have to admit it I have an incredibly sweet tooth.  Not for chocolate though, infact I am one of lifes odd people in that I really don’t like chocolate very much at all!  I do however love cakes and biscuits!  I try the old game where if I don’t have them in the house I can’t have them, but then I just get moody so it’s always best to have at least a packet of Rich Tea or Digestives (thank heavens for McVities!).

However yesterday I fancied something a little more upmarket and having just bought the amazingly beautiful cookbook that Lisa Faulkner has just written I decided to make what she called ‘sunshine shorties’.  They are as easy as she describes them to be and deliciously tasty.  Word to the wise though – you simply can’t stop at one!

Click here for the link to the cookbook:)

George Swann - May 1, 2012 - 09:09

Whoops!! Posted in the wrong place, the deliciousness of the sunshine shorties must have affected my brain.

Tracey - May 2, 2012 - 16:55

lol!

Re-Vamp

I’m having a little play around behind the scenes with my new copy of ProPhoto so every now and then my blog will go offline!  I wish I was clever enough to know how to make a ‘fake’ site to play with while I keep this one live but alas it took me to near death by frustration to work this one out, so for now I am rather liking living and will make do with turning this site on and off! lol

I’m also try to design a new logo which is interesting!  I am sure that it won’t be a permanent one but I kind of like the way it’s going so I’ll see how I live with it once the new site goes live!

Just a little shot to share from my walk to find the bluebells at the weekend.  Sadly it seems that it’s not a good year for bluebells and my walk to find a carpet of them in the woods found merely a rug!

George Swann - May 1, 2012 - 09:04

Nice to see you back Tracey, I was debating on getting the book, I will now. Lisa cooked some wonderful food when she won Celebrity Master Chef.

Tracey - May 2, 2012 - 16:47

She did and the book is just lovely! Thank you for my welcome back too :)

I-Chun and Lindsay say ‘I do’

I had the pleasure of second shooting with James Crockford at the beautiful wedding of I-Chun and Lindsay and the sun shone all day long which made for some beautiful evening sun.  Romance was everywhere, and to top it all the ceremony took place in the same church that Lindsays parents were married in followed by the reception at the stunning Wroxall Abbey.

Run Stretch Burn Summary

Well 8 long weeks and I finally finished!

I am proud to say that other than the last 3 weeks of the challenge where I didn’t do the stretching days I stuck religiously to the plan.  I faced ut in minus 7 degrees and Scottish hills in howling winds and rain to do my runs, I did toning exercises until my thighs burned with pain and finally got my bike out after many years in hiding!

Was it worth it – yes and no!  Yes it was worth it for the sheer fact that I accomplished a full 8 weeks of a fitness challenge where I exercised 6 days out of 7 – I can’t believe I did!  Also from a fitness stance I suppose it is a yes as I am obviously fitter overall than when I started 8 weeks ago and I can run a 9.06 sec mile and run 5 miles (not comfortably but still without needing to dial 999!).  But I did a 10km plan last year which got me fitter in 10 weeks than this did and it was just running 3 times a week!

However it didn’t achieve what I was lead to believe it would make me achieve!  I was under the impression that it was an overall fitness training plan that would target all areas of fitness.  So I expected to be doing toning exercises all over my body.  This wasn’t the case for this challenge.  It focused in the main on exercises that built muscle on your legs!  It did include some small snippets for your arms and tummy but not a squirrels nadgers worth that would make a difference!

The overall conclusion with weight and shape change was disappointing too.  I lost 3 lbs and gained an inch on my calfs and thighs – not what I wanted!  I didn’t lose inches anywhere else and to be honest I can’t really see any difference in the before and after shots.

Sadly I think that this challenge that was fronted for the first two weeks of publication in the Sunday Times by Victoria Pendleton was just a gimmicky publicity stunt for her.  I don’t think that she really had any input into designing the challenge, although I suppose seeing as her sport is cycling maybe she did as most of it was leg work!  There was a huge struggle for a lot of people to find weeks 3 – 8 of the challenge as they didn’t print it but only published it online once you subscribed.  This didn’t go down very well at all and myself along with a lot of others complained and eventually were sent the plan for free. Although even when we did eventually get it there were many mistakes and you had to use common sense to put it right!

Anyway, it’s done, I completed it, I am proud I did but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone!  Here are the final pictures:

I know I should have stood in the same poses but I forgot what I had done originally and couldn’t be bothered to go find out on the MAC – sorry!  Apologies if you haven’t eaten and are viewing these – keep fit gear really isn’t very flattering is it!  I look like a sack of King Eds!

I need a new challenge now…….!!

Cathie Heart - April 9, 2012 - 23:07

Congrats Tracey on sticking it out for a very very long 8 weeks. Proud of you girlie for doing what I just couldn’t manage to do. I’ve just gotten myself a skipping jump rope and a book to do be able to become fitter anywhere, any time without needing to leave my location. Maybe this will be good for you too?! I’m hoping that by skipping I become a bit fitter and keep up my Couch to 5K efforts even if I have to repeat weeks like I’m currently doing. :S

You did it!

Tracey - April 10, 2012 - 08:03

Thanks Cathie, I am quite proud that I stuck it out, although I hardly ever give up on anything that I truly set my mind to – I am so stubborn – lol! Shame I can’t apply the same tactic to giving up biscuits and cakes!

I did try skipping but I constantly found I was injuring myself with the rope rather than actually exercising – lol! Good luck with all your plans x

Lel - April 19, 2012 - 18:10

Well done for sticking with it lady, if it were me I would have just photoshoped myself, qnd then hidden for a,while:)

Tracey - April 19, 2012 - 18:20

Lol – I am too blinking stubborn you see! x
